Think about a speech, song, or message that has inspired or motivated you. How did the speaker or writer use language to make an impact? Connect your experience to at least one rhetorical device you identified in Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

Prompt: A song that has motivated me in the song American Cars by Noah Kahan. The song talk about the feeling of being stuck by using everyday objects like cars to describe these feelings. The song is written in a honest and personal tone which the feelings described feel relatable. In the I Have a Dream Speech, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. uses metaphors to compare broken promises to a blank check. Noah Kahan also uses metaphors in this song by making an American Car a metaphor for a fragile life that breaks down but keeps trying to run.

Summary: Today in class we annotated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s I Have a Dream Speech.

Reflection: This will help me be able to identify rhetorical devices in a text. It will also help me get better at annotating texts.

Describe one thing that makes you different from other people.

Think of a time when you tried to persuade someone to agree with you, change their mind, or do something you wanted. What were you trying to persuade them to do or believe? How did you use ethos, pathos, or logos to persuade them? Which appeal was most effective and why?
